Worm Composting

What to do with your kitchen waste in towns ?

In association with the society based in Pézenas "Vers la Terre", the SICTOM propose you a solution more adapted to your housing environment which allows you to reduce your kitchen waste: worm composting.

What is worm composting?

Worm composting is, because it operates in cold conditions, an odourless composting process, which uses the rubbishvorous qualities (= which destroy the rubbish) of the micro-organisms and of the compost worms.

Vermiculture, or worm composting, allows you to compost your food waste rapidly, while producing high quality compost and fertilizing liquid. Best of all, it’s self-contained and nearly odorless.

Do you know that? The compost worms can eat up to 1kg of our waste a day. Worm composting permits to obtain a natural and ecological amendment.

The worm compost is the result of the digestion of the organic waste, the main actors of which being the compost worms. It is an organic amendment which is very rich in humus, enzymes, growth hormones and bacterial flora and can be used pure without risk of burn on young plantations as well as on adults, or for repotting.

Besides the worm compost which it produces, the worm compost bin allows you to collect some liquid fertilizer.

Like the compost, your worm compost possesses several advantages:

- it is stable and directly assimilable by plants,
- it regenerates exhausted or impoverished grounds,
- it reduces the shock of the transplantation,
- it furthers the implanting, the germination and the growth,
- it decreases the use of the phytosanitary products,
- and it is ecological.

Which kind of waste ?

The worm compost bin is conceived to receive your kitchen waste, as well as your inside green waste (plants, small shrubs)

Caution! The compost worms need fibers! 25 to 30 % of their feeding has to be made of cardboards and dry papers. The ideal place for your worm compost bin is your scullery.

The gardener’s tricks and ways

The worm compost can be used all the year long, for all the works of creation and of maintenance.

- Pots and jardinieres: For repotting, mix 1/3 of worm compost with 2/3 of earth.
As an amendment, add 1 to 2 centimeters of worm compost on the surface of the pot, every 2 months then, mix with the earth on the surface and water.

- Trees and shrubs:
At the time of the plantation, mix 1 to 3 kg of worm compost in the earth.
As an amendment, bring 200 to 400 g of worm compost by m² to every foot, then scratch and water.

- Vegetables, flowers and lawn:
For the sowing or the transplantion, add one or two handles of worm compost by bedding plant on 10 centimeters deep.
In course of vegetation, bury 200 to 300 g/m ² and water.

- Selling price of the worm compost bin, for the users of the SICTOM = 10 € + 35 € for the worms colony.
